The fruit that has “dragon scales”
Dragon fruit, or pitaya, is the tropical fruit of a cactus plant native originally to Latin America and Southeast Asia. The nickname “dragon fruit” was coined from the bright green, spiky-shaped tendrils that poke out of the pinkish-red rind and resemble the scales of a dragon. The flesh of the fruit is white or purple, with black seeds throughout, with a sweet taste much like kiwi combined with pear.
Needless to say, the pitaya is a versatile and delicious fruit that can be used in smoothies, is firm enough to be grilled, or just diced and enjoyed in a fruit salad. It’s low in calories for fruit and has about 3g of fiber per 3.5 ounce serving, making it a great choice for a sweet treat.
This recipe comes to us from Viome Translational Science Clinical Expert Janelle Connell: “My kiddos wanted to try dragon fruit, so we made our own version of the famous Pink Drink today. I added in my Viome Precision Probiotics + Prebiotics to give it an added nutritional boost!”
