Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with These Healthy Chocolate Muffins

choc muffins

In today's world, it's no secret that many of us consume too much sugar. Excessive sugar intake has been linked to a variety of health problems, including digestive health challenges, metabolic issues, mood swings, sleep disruption, and more. While it's okay to indulge in sweet treats occasionally, it's important to be mindful of our overall sugar consumption and make healthier choices when possible.

That's why, on Sundays, we like to make a treat as a family that's a bit healthier than your typical dessert. This week, we whipped up a batch of these delicious chocolate muffins. I say "healthier" because while they do contain maple syrup, which is still a form of sugar, they are free of refined sugar and gluten. Refined sugar, which is found in many processed foods and desserts, has been stripped of its natural nutrients and can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. Using maple syrup instead, we're opting for a more natural sweetener that contains beneficial nutrients like antioxidants and minerals.

These muffins are also gluten-free, which is great for those with gluten sensitivities or anyone looking to reduce their gluten intake. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye that can cause digestive issues for some people. By using gluten-free ingredients like almond flour and coconut flour, we've created a treat that's easier on the digestive system.

But the best part about these muffins? They're incredibly moist and have a rich, chocolatey flavor that's sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. And because they're not overly sweet, they make a great snack or breakfast option. My kiddos absolutely love them, and I feel good knowing that I'm providing them with a treat that's a bit healthier than your average dessert.

So if you're looking for a delicious and nutritious way to indulge your sweet tooth, give these healthier chocolate muffins a try. Your taste buds (and your body) will thank you!

Ingredients

¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

¾ cup almond flour (you can use other gluten-free flours, or white whole-wheat flour)

2 tsp baking powder

¼  tsp salt

2 tbsp melted butter or coconut oil

2 eggs

¼ cup plain Greek yogurt

½ cup pure maple syrup (add more if you want them sweeter)

¼ cup milk (or non-dairy alternative)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix dry ingredients together in a medium bowl. Combine wet ingredients in a large bowl. Slowly incorporate the dry into the wet ingredients, stirring as you go along, until smooth. Place cupcake liners into your muffin pan. Pour batter into each cup to about ⅔ full. Bake for 20 minutes. Test with a toothpick in the center of one muffin to check if baking is complete (toothpick should come out clean). Enjoy for breakfast or a snack!
